How to meet new people???

I just moved to a new town. somehow I imagined that I would meet all these wonderful new people right of the bat. I have been here 3 months and, although, I know that's not a long time Im still bored out of my mind and getting sick of my own company. I do have a buddy that I met through work that I meet for drinks on fridays, but I'm just wondering what others do to meet new people. preferably stuff that doesn't involve going to the bar to meet new people. no offense to bar patrons (I go sometimes too) but mostly people at the bars aren't looking anything other than a one night hook up.
